Backyard Party Porta Potty Checklist

Pink and blue porta potties on a backyard lawn for a party

How many porta potties does a backyard party need?

A backyard party needs 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests over 4 hours. An 80-guest graduation party needs 2 units. If the party runs past 6 hours or serves beer, add 1 unit. A handwashing station near the food is the upgrade guests notice most.

Use the calculator for exact numbers.

Where should I put the porta potty in my yard?

Put the porta potty on level ground 30 to 50 feet from food and seating, downwind on hot days, and within about 15 feet of where our truck can park or a path our hand truck can roll. A side yard by the driveway is the most common spot. Avoid low spots that hold water.

  • Shade keeps the inside cooler.
  • A path light helps after dark.
  • Face the door away from the patio.

When should I book for a June graduation party?

Book porta potties for a June graduation party 2 to 4 weeks ahead in Lancaster County. Graduation Saturdays stack up, and Friday drop-off slots fill first. Units start to run short in the final week before each Saturday.

Standard, deluxe or both?

Choose standard units for casual parties and budgets. Choose a deluxe flushing unit with a sink when guests dress up or the crowd skews older. A common setup for 100 guests is 1 deluxe unit plus 1 standard unit, with a handwashing station by the food.

Quick answers

Will the porta potty smell during the party?

A freshly cleaned unit with new deodorizer should not smell outside the door, especially in shade.

Can kids use it?

Yes. Add a handwashing station so kids wash with soap.

Do I have to clean it?

No. We pick it up Monday and clean it at our yard.
