When do I need a handwashing station?

You need a handwashing station whenever food is served, kids are present or a job requires it by rule. OSHA requires handwashing on construction sites under 1926.51(f) and on farms under 1928.110. For a party, 1 handwashing station near the toilets and 1 near the food line is a good setup.

Hand sanitizer inside a standard unit does not remove dirt or food. Soap and water do. OSHA 1926.51 covers construction washing facilities.

How many handwashing stations do I need?

Craig Rental Works recommends 1 handwashing station for every 4 portable toilets. A party with 2 toilets needs 1 station. A festival with 12 toilets needs 3 stations, plus 1 at each food area. Farm crews need 1 handwashing facility for every 20 workers under OSHA 1928.110.

Deluxe flushing units already have a sink inside, so they do not count toward the 4-to-1 rule.

Where should a handwashing station go?

Put the handwashing station within a few steps of the toilet exit and in the path to the food. Level ground matters: the grey-water tank can tip on a slope. Keep the station off the main walkway so the line does not block traffic.

On job sites, place the station next to the toilets by the site entrance, where our service truck can reach both.

Pro tip

Put the handwashing station where guests walk from the toilets to the food. A station tucked behind the units gets skipped; one in the path gets used.

Handwashing station FAQs

Is the water in the handwashing station hot?

No. The water is room temperature. Restroom trailers have warm water if you need it.

Can I put a handwashing station inside a tent?

Yes, if the floor is level and you can live with some drips. Put a mat under the station.

How often is it refilled on a job site?

Once a week with your toilet service. Busy crews can add a mid-week refill.

Do you rent handwashing stations without a toilet?

Yes. Food stands, petting zoos and outdoor classes rent stations alone. The delivery fee is the same.

What happens in freezing weather?

Water lines can freeze below 32°F. In winter we use antifreeze-safe setups or swap to sanitizer. Call before a cold snap.
