How Porta Potties Are Cleaned and Serviced

A rented porta potty is serviced in 4 steps: the waste tank is pumped by a vacuum truck, the inside is scrubbed and sanitized, fresh deodorizer water goes into the tank, and paper and sanitizer are restocked. Job-site units get this service once a week.

Inside a clean standard porta potty after service

What happens during a porta potty service?

A porta potty service has 4 steps. The technician pumps the waste tank with a vacuum hose, sprays and scrubs the seat, urinal, walls and floor, refills the tank with fresh water and deodorizer, and restocks toilet paper and hand sanitizer. A standard service takes about 5 to 10 minutes per unit.

  1. PumpA vacuum truck empties the 60-gallon waste tank through a hose.
  2. Scrub and sanitizeSeat, urinal, walls, floor and door handle are washed and wiped down.
  3. RechargeFresh water and blue deodorizer go back into the tank.
  4. Restock and checkPaper and sanitizer are refilled; the door, latch and vent are checked.

How often should a porta potty be cleaned?

A porta potty on a job site should be cleaned once a week when it serves up to 10 workers on a 40-hour week. Busier units need 2 services a week. Event units are cleaned before delivery and usually need no service during a 1- or 2-day event.

What is the blue liquid in a porta potty?

The blue liquid in a porta potty is water mixed with a deodorizer. The deodorizer controls odor and slows bacteria in the tank, and the blue dye hides what is underneath. A fresh charge goes in after every pump-out, which is why a just-serviced unit smells clean.

How can I keep a porta potty fresh between services?

Keep a porta potty fresh by placing it in shade, keeping the door closed, keeping trash out of the tank and calling for an extra service before a heavy-use day. Heat speeds up odor, so summer units in full sun need service sooner than units under trees.

  • Place the unit in shade with the vent facing the breeze.
  • Put a small trash can outside the door so wipes and bottles stay out of the tank.
  • Call for an extra service before a big crew day or a weekend event.

What should I do if a unit is not serviced on time?

If a porta potty misses its service day, call the rental company the same day. Craig Rental Works sends a truck within 1 business day. Most missed services happen because a gate was locked or the unit was blocked, so share codes and keep a clear path.

Quick answers

Do you clean the unit during a weekend party?

Usually no. Event units arrive clean and stocked. For long or crowded events, add a mid-event service.

Is the waste disposed of legally?

Yes. Waste goes to a licensed treatment facility, not onto the ground.

Can I clean the unit myself?

You can wipe surfaces, but never add chemicals or water to the tank. Call us for a service instead.
