Planning guide

Where to Put a Porta Potty: Driveway, Backyard or Street

Put a rented porta potty on level, firm ground within about 15 feet of where the service truck can park, with a path at least 36 inches wide. A driveway edge is easiest. A street or sidewalk spot needs a city permit first.

What is the 15-foot rule?

The 15-foot rule means the porta potty should sit within about 15 feet of where our service truck can park, because that is how far the pump hose comfortably reaches. A unit farther away can still be delivered by hand truck, but weekly pumping becomes slow or impossible.

Will a porta potty fit through my gate?

A standard porta potty fits through a gate at least 36 inches wide. A 32-inch gate is too tight. Wheelchair-accessible units and restroom trailers cannot go through gates; they need a truck route to the spot. Measure the narrowest point, including posts and latches.

Can a porta potty go on a slope?

A porta potty can go on a mild slope; the driver levels the base with shims. A slope steep enough to make you lean is too steep, because the unit can rock and the tank can spill. On sloped lots, the bottom of a driveway or a flat patch of lawn works better.

Can I put a porta potty on the street?

You can put a porta potty on a public street or sidewalk only with a permit from the city or borough. In Lancaster city, row homes without driveways often use a rear yard, a private alley pad or a street permit. Most suburban townships do not require a permit on private property.

City of Lancaster handles street permits.

What about HOAs?

Most HOAs allow a porta potty during active construction or a one-time event, but some limit placement or length. Check your HOA rules before booking. A side yard behind a fence, or the driveway edge closest to the garage, usually satisfies an HOA.

Quick answers

Can you put it on my patio?

Yes, if the patio is level and our hand truck can reach it.

Can it go on gravel?

Yes. Gravel is firm and drains well.

Do you need me to mark the spot?

Yes, with a cone, ribbon or chalk, and a photo by text is even better.
