Planning guide

Porta Potties in a Pennsylvania Winter

Porta potties keep working in a Pennsylvania winter when the tank gets a freeze-resistant treatment, the unit sits out of drifting snow on a cleared path, and handwashing stations are swapped for sanitizer or protected from freezing.

Do porta potty tanks freeze in winter?

A porta potty tank can freeze when temperatures stay below about 20°F for a day or more. Craig Rental Works treats winter tanks with a salt brine or antifreeze-safe mix so the tank stays slushy instead of solid. Frozen tanks cannot be pumped, so treatment keeps weekly service on schedule.

Where should a porta potty go in snow?

In winter, place the porta potty on high, level ground out of drifting areas, close to a path that will be plowed or shoveled. Keep the door facing away from the wind. The service truck needs a cleared lane to within about 15 feet; units buried behind plowed piles miss service.

What about handwashing stations in winter?

Handwashing station water lines freeze below 32°F. In deep cold, Craig Rental Works either treats the station or swaps to hand sanitizer until a thaw. Job sites that need soap and water under OSHA 1926.51(f) can keep a station in a heated trailer or a sheltered spot.

Do snowstorms delay service?

Yes. Ice and heavy snow can delay weekly service by a day or two. We catch up as soon as roads are safe and call ahead when a storm moves a route. Lake-effect snow near Erie and hills around Scranton see more delays than Lancaster County.

Quick answers

Do you rent heated porta potties?

Restroom trailers have heat. Standard units are not heated.

Should I add a second service in winter?

Usually no; use drops in cold weather. Busy indoor-outdoor jobs may still need it.

Can the unit tip in high wind?

Yes. We stake or strap units on open hilltops on request.
